Well, you certainly have a fine gift, so why not pursue it? I must have a billion story fragments on my PC and laptop, none of which will probably ever get completed, but I lack the discipline to just sit down and work at it, which is what I need. For me, just finishing a story would be the goal. Getting published sounds like a pipe dream at this point. I majored in Philosophy and minored in English, and my professors always encouraged my literary development, and one professor even suggested that a paper I submitted for her class should be sent in for publishing, but I never got past my procrastination and eventually somewhere among my many moves I lost that story. Oh, well. Just keep listening to Socrates. I think my muse is Mediocrates.

An excellent post!

I've often wondered whether people really "believe" in anything - or whether:

(a) they assume something to be true because it seems reasonable (eg. "the earth is round") and they have never thought to question it; or

(b) they want to believe something even though it is inherently unreasonable.

I have frequently wanted to believe in something, but reasoning/common sense have prevented me. For example, a friend asked me why I didn't share his particular religious beliefs when they offered such an attractive view of the afterlife. My answer was that "wishing didn't make it so".

I don't think "wishing made it so" even for him. He was simply able to suspend his reasoning with respect to his religious beliefs (while being a reasoning individual in other aspects of his life).

In short, I don't know if he "believed" anything; he just wanted to believe but simultaneously didn't want to think about this "desired belief" too critically (if at all).

I wonder if most "believers" fall into this category...

I'm big on Kurosawa, so I'd have to go with Yojimb...

I'm big on Kurosawa, so I'd have to go with Yojimbo, which if I remember rightly was a sequel to The Seven Samurai, which inspired the Magnificent Seven. And don't forget Jadorowski's El Topo, probably the strangest Western ever.
